Setting Caps Lock as the NVDA Modifier Key

To set NVDA to use Caps Lock as a modifier key for screen reader commands, follow these steps:

  1. Open the NVDA menu by pressing the key combination: Insert + N.
  2. Navigate to Preferences:
    • Press the Down Arrow until you reach the "Preferences" item.
    • Press the Right Arrow to open the submenu.
    • Press Enter on the "Settings" item.
  3. Select the Keyboard category:
    • Use the Down Arrow to find and select the "Keyboard" category.
  4. Go to Modifier Keys settings:
    • Press the Tab key until you reach the item labeled "Select NVDA Modifier Keys".
    • Press Enter to open the list.
  5. Select Caps Lock:
    • Use the Down Arrow to navigate to "Caps Lock" in the list.
    • Press the Space key to mark it as the NVDA modifier key.
  6. Save your changes:
    • Press the Tab key until you reach the "OK" button.
    • Press Enter to confirm and save the settings.

Using Caps Lock with NVDA

  • To open the NVDA menu, press: Caps Lock + N.
  • To type uppercase letters:
    • Press the Caps Lock key twice quickly.
  • To switch back to lowercase letters:
    • Again, press the Caps Lock key twice quickly.
